WHY
The project was initiated with the purpose of psychologically observe, analyse and understand the milieu of the house of G. A. Hagemann. It enabled the exploration of tapestry craftsmanship on a large scale with the use of traditional techniques of crafting. Also, the combination of art and function was explored in terms of acoustic improvements of the room of its location.
Working on the artworks has taught me to acquaint myself with the social and psychological aspects of a community and communicate it in a visual manner. I have explored the craftmanship of tapestries and learned how the use of yarn in different contexts is influential on the message and graphical composition of the motif, colors, and symbols.
HOW
The tapestries are based on the paintings "En Bjergbestigerske" and "En Fysiker" by J.F. Willumsen that ornament the dormitory's hall. The figures of the images have been kept with corresponding colors whereas the residents of the dormitory have added the symbols contained. These are linking their perception of the house to an object describing traditions, events, physical elements, personal belonging, etc. In this way, the current spirit of the house is delineated but previous generations of residents can undoubtedly recognize specific objects.
WHAT
Two tapestries exhibited at G. A. Hagemanns Kollegium in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The tapestries measure 130x170cm and are made of acrylic yarn and hessian. Latex has been applied to the rear side in sealing the materials. Rockwool is mounted behind the tapestries and enclosed with backing cloth. The frame is built from wood and painted off-white.
